Garden
In 2023 I moved from the states to Spain. I left not knowing when, or if I was going to go back. During this time in my life I had just graduated college, and I was leaving behind everything I had known for most of my life. I found myself in a desert literally and metaphorically speaking. It was a barren place where all I could hear were my own thoughts. This was the beginning of a profound personal transformation.
I was too overwhelmed to make art the way that I was making it before. I had much less time and energy, but I still had the desire to create. Without realizing it, I started using art therapy techniques such as scribble drawings. This is where a person scribbles on a piece of paper and our subconscious mind projects images onto the mass of tangled lines. This is a practice that can allow a person to become aware of their subconscious thoughts and feelings, but it can simply be a tool for relaxation. I feel grounded by the sensation and noises of the materials on paper.
This series is called garden because it is when I began to plant new seeds in my life and my artistic practice. It is a way for me to tend to my inner world and create a safe space within.
